George Ruffin is elected to Boston Common Council.

Ruffin (R) becomes the first African-American elected to the Boston Common Council. He is reelected in 1876. At least one and as many as three African-American serves on the council every year until 1895. After the redistricting of 1896, none are elected until 1949.*
